Running a Business in General
It goes without saying that a branding studio should have strong branding. When building my creative agency, Hearthstone Creative, I wanted to showcase all the skills I could apply to my clients’ businesses by executing them within my own.
The months of tweaking and refinement towards building a brand that felt distinct and personal to me have paid off in more ways than one.
Approach
01: Naming & Brainstorming
Building a brand from scratch requires a lot of brainstorming to come up with the perfect name. How do you make your brand unique, memorable, and make sure no one else can confuse it with another brand?
I named my agency “Hearthstone” by meditating on the overall feeling I wanted my clients to feel: welcome, warm, and at home. The hearth of a fireplace is a metaphor and symbol for a place of gathering and of new beginnings. I want my clients to feel like they not only have a creative expert in their corner, but a friend who’s cheering them on, even after the project is over.
02: Research
I went through my own brand questionnaire that I typically assign clients to understand my competition and how I wanted to niche myself in the market. I evaluated my direct competitors and their strengths/weaknesses to figure out how to position my visual identity and messaging well in the market.
03: Mood Board
Using textures, colors, fonts, imagery, and other sources of inspiration, I built a mood board to ground the visual direction I wanted my brand to go in. I focused less on other logos I liked and more on the overall feeling I wanted to evoke through my visual identity.
04: Iterate
I spent several months iterating and restarting until I settled on the logo that best represented my brand messaging and values.
05: Create Visual Suite
Once I locked in on a primary logo, I was able to build out an arsenal of supporting logos, hand-illustrated icons, lockups, and other visual assets to round out my visual suite.
06: Applications
I applied my branding to my website, social media platforms and content, CRM platform, welcome kits, presentation templates, and investment guides to create a fully cohesive experience for my audience from any angle.
